Mapusaga O Aiga Incorporated (MOA) or Family Haven is a non profit organisation
which was established in 1993 amid growing concerns that incidences of sexual
abuse and domestic violence in Samoa.
Aim/objectives: To
provide public education and raise awareness on topics of sexual abuse and
domestic violence; create opportunities for training of personnel in family
counseling, administration and any related areas; liaise between government
departments, non governmental organisations and individuals concerned with these
issues; to promote changes in Legislation and to ratify relevant international
treaties; raise funds and seek sponsorship and any type of financial assistance
for the attainment of the organisations aims; to undertake any project, hold
seminars and other activities for the promotion of the organisations
aims.
Current
Activities:
· Awareness workshops on domestic violence, sexual abuse and issues
regarding Human Rights violations
· MOA is in partnership with Police on
Domestic violence and child abuse workshops and also carry out counselling
orientation
· Carry out weekly radio programs to raise awareness on
issues
· Carries out community education with schools, church groups,
business sector, young people, university and women and men's PTA
groups
Funding:
Financial assistance from
the New Zealand Government and the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in Samoa has
provided the means by which the organisation has been able to work closely with
Government in a collective effort to eliminate all forms of violence and sexual
abuse. In late 1995, MOA was appointed by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs of
Samoa to manage the "violence" component of the Ministry’s 3 year project, which
is funded by the NZ Government.
MOA in its search for new
sources of funding has been successful in obtaining a 5 year funding from NZAID
in 2003.
